Changes for good reasons are valid. As we all know that Google always do changes in its search algorithm and display to benefit search users. Google has recently done image search features and display changes also mentioned on Google webmasters central blog. There is mixed feedback from users. Search users feel happy to see big resolution images without going to related website on the other hand webmasters and SEO consultants are not happy with this. Because, Webmasters and SEO people noticed big drop in traffic from after Google’s new image search features.
As a SEM and SEO consultant I took this as opportunity for advertisers and Google. As we know that millions of users use Google image search to search any type of image even web designers, developers and webmasters.
As I am not sure and it is just my assumption that Google may use the new image search features as big potential for advertising ads on image search page. If you can see the image below, as a web consultants and SEM expert I would suggest Google to use the new image search feature for paid ads. Just imagine the image below, as an advertiser I would prefer to advertise ads on this page. When you click any image it opens up the big screen within Google image search with higher resolution of image.
You can see the right hand side area can be used for advertising.

This is the reason why webmasters noticed big drop in traffic from Google image search changes.
I wish Google may utilize the space for paid ads.
